Behind the Art

The Art Inside the Book

Every part of Book One opens with a piece of interior art. Four parts, four plates — each one created in black and white first, the way it prints inside the paperback, before it exists anywhere in color.

Part One: Maingat (Careful)

This one opens Part One. She's the first thing you see, before you know why she matters.

Part Two interior plate, black and white
Part Two interior plate, color
Part Two: Mabait (Good)

This one opens Part Two. Those eyes belong to the Kapre — and that's not a threat, that's him keeping watch.

Part Three interior plate, black and white
Part Three interior plate, color
Part Three: Matapang (Brave)

And this one opens Part Three. The Tikbalang — walking a path that isn't as straight as it looks.

Part Four interior plate, black and white
Part Four interior plate, color
Part Four: Wakas (The End)

And this one opens Part Four. The lights are ahead of her now, not behind.

Four pieces of art. Four parts of the book.
